Working Memory
Working memory is the ability to hold information briefly while using or changing it.
Everyday Examples
Working memory may be used when following several directions, doing arithmetic mentally, remembering a short number long enough to type it, or keeping track of steps in a task.
How We Practice It
Activities may involve remembering sequences, visual locations, symbols, or information that must be reordered or recalled after a delay.
What Can Affect Performance?
Attention, distraction, fatigue, anxiety, language demands, and familiarity with the task can all influence working-memory performance.
A short online working-memory task cannot diagnose a memory disorder.
